Arnel Dela Gente: Losing my DSLR was a blessing in disguise.
"I put at least 5 rolls in each of my bags."
Tell us about yourself.
I'm 38 years old. I came from Manila Philippines and I'm working as a fashion, runway, portrait and events photographer in Paris, France.
When and how did the film journey begin for you?
Long story if i start from the beginning. I'll just tell you when I started film seriously. I have several 35mms and medium format cameras at home but I'm a bit lazy using them since digital is very convenient for me and I guess for most of us.
Anyway, one day I went to a club with friends and I had my DSLR and a 35mm with me and a couple of lenses and flash. We were there till 5am then when it was time to go I couldn't find a cab so I took the first metro to go back home. Then I fell asleep inside the metro train and missed my stop by 2 stations. I'm not sure if I left my bag or someone took it while I was asleep. I went to find my stuff but it was gone. So I went home weeping about the loss of my stuff. I couldn't think normal for a week, I was very angry with myself and the person who took them. Then I finally realized that I still had cameras at home but I needed to start buying films again.
I went out, I asked friends to pose for me. Things went well. Losing my DSLR was a blessing in disguise. I was able to improve my skills in taking photos. I slowed down, composition got better and I control everything.
What Could we always find in your gear bag?
I always have a 35mm film in my bag even though I don't have a camera with me. I have a bunch of Ilford HP5 400s and I put at least 5 rolls in each of my bags.
What camera makes you click?
I love medium format cameras. The sound of the shutter is so relaxing for me.
Who are your models? How do you interact with them before shooting?
It varies, sometimes I get models from agencies in Paris. Sometimes in Models/Photographers groups on FB. It's a SOP to always set the ground rules before shooting. I always try to have a very friendly relationship with people that I work with.
What inspires you most?
Life, basically I get inspired by everything. Friends, loved ones, people who supports what I do. I get my inspiration from them and I get my motivation from my critiques.
Do you have any advice for film photographers out there?
Do not stop shooting films and stop comparing digital and analog.
Do you think you will still be shooting film in 20 years?
I'll be shooting film for as long as live, it's in my blood.
