Black and White without a doubt, by Avi Cohen

"It's a real love story!"

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Avi, I'm 24 YO from Haifa, Israel. Right now I'm an Architecture student trying to handle between photography and studies and in between working in photoshop, so photos are mainly part of my life.

When and how did the film journey begin for you?

Actually I was born into an age of film, as an 8 year old child I got a little Canon point and shoot camera that i shot with during travels and untill the age of 15 i used it to classroom travels and everything. Then i got my dslr and when i was 18 my father brought me a Pentax k1000, put inside one roll and told me :"if you want to know how to photograph you'd better practice on the real thing" and from this point my journey began again , i got more cameras aside from the Pentax through years, right now I own 28 film cameras. And it's a real love story!

What type of film do you usually shoot and what made you choose it?

I mostly use BW films. My main ones are HP5 and Tri-X, this is 95% of my stock. Due to the fact that I shot BW and I develop my film at home, those film are my main players. Lately I fell in love with fp4 by ilford, it's a great one also.

What camera makes you click?

There are a lot, but if I have to put my finger on one of them I'll say my pentax k1000, there is magic inside this box.

Between black and white and colour film which would you choose?

Black and White without a doubt. BW is my love, my style, my life, call it as you want.
That's what I do the best, that's what makes my soul happy.

What lenses do you use?

50mm prime in most of the time. While i photograph concerts I use 24mm to catch the whole action.

Do you make any experiments on film?

I can't call them experiments but I do push my film differently from the book. I love to play with the chemicals and the developer and everything that I do in the darkroom while trying to reach what I have on my mind.
