Frederic Navarro Cifani: Street photography in Barcelona and kids

"I am one of those photographers who like shooting in the distance and capturing the moment in which things happen without preparing them."

Tell us about yourself.

I'm 40 years old, live in Barcelona and I am a graphic designer and photographer.

When and how did the film journey begin for you?

My father taught me using his camera, when I was about 10 years old, with a fantastic Miranda Sensorex, a camera he bought the day I was born and which I still use today.

What Could we always find in your gear bag?

It depends on where I go. Usually I use my Rollei35 for Street Photography for his discretion, portability and ease when shooting.
Although I also use the Miranda Sensorex or Rolleiflex, it depends on my mood and the desire to carry some weight.
When I travel, I always take at least three cameras loaded with different films and sensitivities. Almost always you see the Miranda Sensorex, the Rollei35 and Diana F +, although I also took the Rolleiflex on occasions, for example in my last trip to the Russian Arctic.
It will be easy to find many reels in black and white, color, 35mm and 120mm. I also carry a flash, mini tripod, a photometer, a filter x10 magnification, 28mm and an 135mm for Miranda.

What camera makes you click?

It is a difficult question to answer because there are several really: Nikon F, Contax G2, Mamiya 330

Who are your models? How do you interact with them before shooting?

My favorite models are my three children. I have a series of photos just for them. I am one of those photographers who like shooting in the distance and capturing the moment in which things happen without preparing them, just being careful and waiting for them to happen.

What inspires you most?

I am inspired by everything that is unusual, rare, sometimes obscure, but not less beautiful.
Surrealism has always fascinated me. Photographers like Rodney Smith, Thomas Barbey, Brooke Shaden and especially unretouched photographs by Philippe Ramette.
Other photographers who inspire me are Henri Cartier-Bresson, his theory of the turning point and the element of spontaneity are two references to me.

Do you have any advice for film photographers out there?

Personally I like to try the hundreds of different films. Some of them as special as the washi film or Revolog Film or films with a very low iso ... Each one is different and the results are always surprising.
If something I can advise, is to experiment everything they can. With different techniques, film, cameras, etc.
