Girls only. By Mura Dylan

"When I’m finally satisfied with a picture, I want to do something different! Films allow me to do that. "

Tell us about yourself.

I’m 22 years old and I live in Belgium. I’m doing a masters in business engineering. I’m thinking about moving to Canada once I get my degree.

When and how did the film journey begin for you?

My dad had a Nikon TW2 and I was fascinated by the thing. Later, a friend of his sold me a professional SLR for almost nothing and I took it everywhere, even at school. During my teenage years, I meet a girl who was also into photography and we shot a lot. You can see her in my pictures, she’s still my main inspiration today.

She’s also the reason I only shoot girls. I always felt that if you want to be good at something, you have to focus on one thing at a time.

What type of film do you usually shoot and what made you choose it?

Trial and error. I tried every film I could found until I was really satisfied. Theses days, I use the Fuji Astia 100F when I shoot color. I have no preferences for black and white.

Most of the time, I think about the result before the shooting : How do I want the picture to look like? and then I take the more suitable film.

Films offers so many possibilities. I don’t like to do the same thing over and over … When I’m finally satisfied with a picture, I want to do something different! Films allow me to do that.

What camera makes you click?

I use an old Minolta Dynax. I have never tried another SLR seriously and it is not in my plan.

Between black and white and colour film which would you choose?

As I said before, the best film is the one that suits better the picture. For example, I love to use B&W film indoor, it gives a feeling of intimacy.

What lenses do you use?

I only have a 50mm lens. I don’t feel the need for another lens. I’m shooting one girl at a time and I feel that 50mm is the best for this job. I think that only using one lens allows you to get the best of it.
