M'hammed Kilito: A different story from each person

" Hasselblad 500 cm, I’m so in love with the sound the mirror makes when it slaps after pressing the shutter button."

Tell us about yourself.

I am 35 years old, living in Rabat, Morocco. Working as a freelance photographer and videographer when I’m not travelling and working on my personal photography projects.

When and how did the film journey begin for you?

Ever since I was a kid, my dad gave me his Canon FTB. I used it tremendously for many years until it broke. But the film journey started seriously in 2006, when I took a photography course and had this amazing professor that was so passionate about teaching photography. I got deeply hooked since then and photography became part of my everyday life.

What Could we always find in your gear bag?

Either a Canonet or a Hasselblad 500 cm, a couple of Portra 400 rolls, an old dust blower, a cloth, a swiss knife and a shutter release cable.

What camera makes you click?

Definitely the Hasselblad 500 cm, I’m so in love with the sound the mirror makes when it slaps after pressing the shutter button.

Who are your models? How do you interact with them before shooting?

It depends on the project and the camera. For example, if I’m shooting street photography with the Canonet, I usually don’t interact much and even don’t establish eye contact. I zone focus previously, shoot quickly and move. The Hasselblad is less discrete; it takes more time to set for taking the picture and quite often, you end up making some good new friends.

What inspires you most?

People, I love shooting people. Each one has a different story and has something to teach you.

Do you have any advice for film photographers out there?

I don’t believe much in that, find your own way and do what you have to do before it’s too late.

Do you think you will still be shooting film in 20 years?

Absolutely, as long as it’s still available.
