Surreal landscapes on film, by Ivana Cunja

"The smell, the test strips, and the waiting for the whole photo to appear on paper; it was like magic."

Tell us about yourself.

Hi, my name is Ivana Cunja, but everybody calls me Iva. I’m 30 & come from Ljubljana, Slovenia. I studied to become an art teacher, but am currently unemployed.
I love hiking and spending time in nature, it helps me stay positive.

When and how did the film journey begin for you?

When I was about 12/13 my dad bought me my first camera. It was a simple point and shot Minolta. Then in high school I joined a photography course. Being in a darkroom was really fun: the smell, the test strips, and the waiting for the whole photo to appear on paper; it was like magic.
It wasn’t until university when I could actually afford a (good) digital camera, but even since then I’ve never stopped shooting film.

What type of film do you usually shoot and what made you choose it?

AgfaPhoto Vista plus. Because is not so expensive.

What camera makes you click?

The one that works. Currently that’s mostly Praktica VLC3. I would like to try Pentacon Six TL and Contax T2.

Between black and white and colour film which would you choose?

Colour. Right now that’s what’s cheaper.

What lenses do you use?

Meyer-Optik 2,8/29 & Pentacon 1,8/50.
