Verena Köck. Film filled the gap

"Film. It helps me slow down and be more connected with the people I photograph."

Tell us about yourself.

I'm 28 years old and I live in Austria. I'm the owner of a 'home for old people' where up to 30 people can live. Alongside I`m a freelance photographer.

When and how did the film journey begin for you?

My personal film love story started this year. I used to shoot digital before (and sometimes I still do), but at some point I wasn`t happy anymore with the things I created, or the way I created them. There was something missing, some sort of gap I had to fill. Since I use film it feels like this gap has been filled up. It helps me slow down and be more connected with the people I photograph. It helps me and my photography to be honest.

What Could we always find in your gear bag?

It changes all the time. At the moment I love to use my Canon AE1 with a 50mm lens, my Mamiya 645 super and a Polaroid back for the Mamiya. There is also a Pentacon Six TL and a Polaroid 635CL with me when I`m shooting. Aaaaaand film.

What camera makes you click?

Right at the moment it`s the Mamiya I love the most. Especially with the Polaroid back.

Who are your models? How do you interact with them before shooting?

Most of the time I shoot with friends and people I know. Sometimes I also shoot with models and strangers, but working with people I know makes it a lot easier for me to create my visions because they trust me. I do not plan many things before shooting, and most of the time I just go with the mood of the moment because I`m not good at expressing myself with words. Lately I really like to keep it very simple, basic and natural.

What inspires you most?

Life itself and all kinds of art. Painting, music, poetry, photography, nature, people and feelings.

Do you think you will still be shooting film in 20 years?

I hope so. :)
